The User Logic takes the Lead

Its now evident that the last years emerging power from the users of Internet and their individual logic is now more and more dominant.

So on our way through the ongoing evolution to the Metaweb (Connecting intelligence) we are now at a stage where knowledge and people are connected.

Old marketing and PR traditions with strong messege control is challenged and companys have now to realise that they must let part of the control go over to the users.

Impact through traditional marketing such a banners, DM and ads, etc. will weaken.

Rapidly, new and holistic, digital strategies have to be created. Because individual users will be the authorities. Not the companys.

Today its hard to find, in any company world wide, where the 4 main logics that drives our digital future is managed and coordinated with clearity.

Will their be CLO´s (Chief Logic Officers) that coordinates and leads the companys resources to success and excellence in a world that is user driven?

I dont realy know but " Times are changing".

Joshua D. Rand and Peter Tuscher

I visited Sapotek and there had a meeting with Sapoteks CEO Joshua D. Rand. We had a very interesting discussion about several matters regarding the web 2.0 evolution in general and web desktops in specific. We came to focus on, with referal to web desktops, these questions;

- Flash vs Ajax and what is to prefer. Pro and cons for a web desktop.
- The possibilities for a web desktop in a multi intranet environment?
- What to think about when prototyping and how fast can a Swedbank branded prototype be produced?
- Sapotek and other stuff going on
- What is beyond web desktop - MetaWeb?

To follow up this discussion we will now set up a telephone meeting with Sapotek tech guys and Swedbank tech guys to deeper dig in to what can be done in a short time perspective.

I also learned that Sapotek has íts programming resources in Mexico. The New York facilitys are more lika a show room and sales office.

The Social Media Summit 2007

The main purpose of this trip was to participate in a Web 2.0 conference. A conference that focus on how to implement Web 2.0 technology and thinking in a company with special bearing on social medias and blogs. Both in a internal as well as external perspective.

A few prominent examples of social media applications are;

Wikis: Wikipedia
Social networking: MySpace, Ning and Facebook
Presence apps: Twitter
Video sharing: YouTube (video sharing)
Virtual reality: Second Life
Events: Upcoming
News aggregation: Digg, Reddit and Stumbleupon
Photo sharing: Flickr and Zooomr
Livecasting: Justin.tv
Episodic online video: Stickham, YourTrumanShow
Media sharing: ShareNow and Pownce
Social bookmarking: del.icio.us
Online gaming: World of Warcraft
Game sharing: Miniclip.com
Social shopping: Amazon.com

The conference was case driven and we got hands on examples from GM, California State, UNicef, Microsoft, Trump University, and many others.

Totaly 4 days with work shops, bench marking and seminars. And one of the best conferences I have attended. My head is fully loaded with new ideas!

What is a Web Desktop?

One reason beside to visit the Social Media Summit was also to get to now more about so called web desktops in general and Satopeks Desktoptwo in specific.

Desktoptwo is a free online desktop or Webtop developed by Sapotek (it's also been called a WebOS although Sapotek makes clear on its website that the term is premature and a bit presumptuous) that mimics the look, feel and functionality of the desktop environment of an operating system.

The software is currently in beta stage yet has acquired more than 160,000 active users since its launch in August 2006. Desktoptwo is fully web-based and requires Flash player to operate. Unlike some other so-called online desktops, which are more akin to aggregators of stand-alone applications, the web applications found on Desktoptwo are built on the same open source scripting language, PHP, and as a result the applications are interoperable and include, for example, drag-and-drop functionality.

Desktoptwo belongs to a category of services that intend to turn the Web into a full-fledged platform by using Web services as a foundation along with display technologies that replicate the experience of desktop applications for users. In a "Cloud OS", or what is essentially a Service-oriented architecture or SOA, the functionality of a server is granularized and asbtracted as Web services that Web developers can use to create composite applications similar to how desktop software developers use several APIs of the OS to create their applications.

Sites like Facebook attempt to create a similar effect by exposing their APIs and allowing developers to create applications upon these.

Some of the features currently found on Desktoptwo are:

File sharing
Webmail
Blog creator
Instant messenger
Address book
Calendar
Live Chat rooms
Notepad
Bookmarks/Favorites
Message boards
RSS Reader
Website Editor
Office productivity applications
Online document collaboration

Advantages with a Web Desktop

- Access to a personalized desktop from any internet enabled device on any platform.
- No need to install applications.
- Application sharing among users located at different remote locations.

In (my) theory this is also a possible new way of consolidate intranets in a multiple intranet environment and using the "old" intranets as sophisticated data bases feeding the internal individual employee web desktop.
